Designs for the plans to build a new London Underground station at Battersea Power Station have been approved by Wandsworth Council.

The go ahead for construction was given by its planning committee in a unanimous vote as it is scheduled to open in 2020.

It is planned to open in Battersea Park Road, run Northern Line trains into Battersea, and become the borough’s first new train station for 95 years.

Designed by Grimshaw and Partners, the project will be entirely funded by the area’s private sector developers.

Planning chairman and councillor Will Sweet said: “This is a momentous occasion in the ongoing story of Nine Elms.

“Bringing the Northern Line to Battersea has been a fundamental aim of the council for many years and a crucial part of the jigsaw that makes up the area’s regeneration.

“The arrival of tube services to this part of east Battersea will unlock the thousands of new jobs that are a key component of the area’s regeneration.

“The new station building looks world class and will be a fitting welcome to Nine Elms.”
