Wandsworth’s best performing schools based on GCSE results have been revealed following the latest figures published by the Government.

The borough has outperformed the national average for achievement, according to the statistics.

Attainment 8 is a new way of calculating pupil achievement.

It measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications, with mathematics and English given extra weight.

Schools meeting the criteria have achieved an average Attainment 8 score of 49.5, above the national average of 44.6, which ranks it 13th out of all 32 London boroughs.

Councillor Sarah McDermott, Wandsworth Council’s cabinet member for education and children’s services, said: “Overall these are very pleasing figures. Across the board Wandsworth is performing strongly and our schools have measured up well in London against all the performance criteria.

“It is particularly heartening to see how well our schools are doing within the core subjects and that I know that is down to the tremendous efforts of teachers, headteachers, governors and all other school staff and volunteers.

“And of course these results reflect the hard work put in by our pupils and the support they get from parents and carers, all of whom are vital to educational success.”

Harris Academy Battersea, in Battersea Park Road, was Wandsworth’s top-performing state school with 59.8, closely followed by Graveney School, in Welham Road, at 58.5.

Harris Academy Battersea principal David Moody said: “When the school joined the Harris Federation only four years ago, it was a failing school which had let down many local families.

"It’s been an incredible four years. By setting high expectations for every student - whatever their background or ability - and helping them develop a real love of learning, Harris Academy Battersea has become the highest performing school in Wandsworth and fourth best in the entire country for pupil progress.

"These results are down to the efforts of our talented students, hard-working staff and governors - and have been achieved without changing our admissions. We are incredibly proud to be a non-selective school serving children and families in our local community."
