Several ‘major’ improvements are soon coming to Putney High Street, Wandsworth Council has announced.

The improvement plan, passed through by councillors on February 21, seeks to be the most ‘radical’ revamp of the street in years.

Installation of a ‘Copenhagen Crossing’ trial scheme in the street, making it easier to cross, reducing the speed limit to 20mph, and a new ‘City Tree’ are all part of the project’s £640,000 first phase.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, the council’s community services spokesman, said: “We have been working on these proposals for some time, and I’m pleased phase one was agreed last night. We hope Putney residents will quickly notice the improvements.

“Going forward, there’s lots more we want to do. Some funding is in place and we are working hard to secure more.

“We’re disappointed that our recent bid to TfL was unsuccessful, especially as the Mayor of London has stated that tackling pollution is a priority for him, but we will continue to work closely with TfL and make a further funding bid later this year.”

The plan aims to improve traffic flow, reduce pollution, as well as increase safety and the aesthetics of the area and follows consultations with residents.

Below is a list of what the other improvements will include:

- Sections of a road-narrowing scheme in part of Putney High Street, enabling pavements to be widened

- Improvement of junctions of Putney Bridge Road and Lacy Road with the street

- A piece of public art, or ‘green wall’, on the cinema façade

- Uplighting for key buildings

- The removal of ‘unnecessary’ guardrails

- More trees being planted and planters being installed

- A trial cycle lane contraflow

- Improved cycling provision
