The London marathon is taking place this weekend and many Wandsworth residents are participating.

Here is some Wandsworth residents to watch out for in the race on Sunday, April 22:

Charlie Degale, who works as a physical instructor for the Metropolitan Police, is running the marathon to raise money for Children with Cancer UK after his surviving his battle with lung cancer. He felt inspired to take on the challenge while undergoing gruelling chemotherapy treatment.

Sophie Wood, a brands and events director in Liverpool Street, is participating to raise money for Leonard Cheshire, a charity who supports people with disabilities. She was inspired to run for the charity because of her 14 year old disabled cousin.

Brad Owens, who works as an IT account manager for software company Dolphin Dynamics on Upper Richmond Road, is raising money for Barnardo’s, despite still recovering from cancer. He has adopted two children through Barnardo’s and this is the second time Brad has run the marathon for Barnardo’s, as he also completed it in 2015.

Max Powles, who lives in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth, has chosen to run for Lepra, a charity that aims to prevent and help people with Leprosy, a disease which can cause life-changing disabilities. He has raised a total of £1,320 for the charity so far.

Clíodhna McCorley, an actress who lives in Clapham, is running to raise money for The National Brain Appeal. The charity supports the hospital where she had her life saving brain surgery in 2015, after a large brain tumour was putting pressure on her trigeminal nerve. This is the most recent fundraising event that Clíodhna is undertaking, having raised over £100,000 in total for the charity.

The mass race begins at 10am at Blackheath, in Lewisham, with The Queen officially starting the marathon this year.

Good luck to all of the participants.
