An amateur theatre group based in Wandsworth will be performing their first ever relaxed show.

Southfields Theatre Group will be staging a specially adapted performance of their summer production of Louisa May Alcott’s classic, Little Women on Saturday, June 16 beginning at 2:30pm.

The show will be modified for those with autism, learning difficulties and sensory and communication needs.

Staged in fully wheelchair accessible St Barnabas Church, Lavenham Road, the auditorium will be filled with natural light as well as stage lights.

The audience will be warned of any loud noise in advance of the performance and there will be a pre-show touch tour of the set available to those who are visually impaired.

There will also be a chill out area with a screen showing the performance for those who wish to leave the auditorium but want to continue to watch.

Southfields Theatre Group believed it was time to push the boundaries of what a local community theatre group could offer.

The relaxed performance idea was inspired by chairperson Ben Robinson sister, Amy. She is severely disabled and breaths using a tracheotomy which needs to be suctioned frequently using a loud machine.

Ben Robinson said: “Because my sister was born with brain damage, she has never been able to go to the theatre or see me as a performer. The idea was inspired by her and we want to make sure that as a theatre group we are accessible for families with autistic members.”
