Wandsworth residents celebrated Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal wedding with street parties taking places across the borough.

A record number of 74 street parties have been organised to celebrate the occasion, with 68 on the wedding day with more planned for Bank Holiday weekend.

Residents in Galesbury Road and Jeypore Road, Earlsfield immersed themselves in the landmark day on Saturday, covering their streets with union jack bunting.

The celebration, which around 70 adults and 40 children attended, began at midday and a big screen was installed to watch the royal wedding.

Seven women from the street marked the occasion by getting into their own original wedding gowns as well as the only remaining shop front Time Signs recreating poster images from the street’s Coronation party in 1953.

After the wedding coverage ended, residents gathered for a royal tea and in honour of the bringing together of cultures by Prince Harry & Meghan residents contributed their own traditional dishes which included Indian, Polish, English and Italian.

Residents hosted post lunch activities on the street for more than 30 children including penalty shootout, basketball, street chalk drawing, gingerbread decoration, face painting, and mini tennis.

The big screen was used again at 5pm to show the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester United.

For the evening entertainment, a street resident’s father who lived locally in his youth returned with his band to provide music.

Another street party took place on Combemartin Road, Putney. More than 300 people attended the celebration which was organised by Sutherland Grove Conservation area residents association.

The event raised more than £1,000 for Friends of Greenmead School and was supported by local businesses.

During the day, attendees were able to enjoy many activities including music by Merton Youth Jazz band and all day street games for children.

A highlight of the event was the bake off, judged by Masterchef 2012 winner Keri Moss, with 18 cakes entered into the competition. The winner of the adult cake was Kum Gomez and winner of children competition Isabella and Miles Sealey.

The dogs joined in the fun, with more than 20 dogs taking part in a dog show with nine winning dogs receiving goody bags donated by Pet Pavilion.

Six more Royal wedding themed street parties will be held on the bank holiday weekend on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 bringing the total number of parties to 74.
