Wandsworth County Court is set to close alongside others across England next year in a bid by the Government to save cash.

The court, in Upper Richmond Road, will be axed as money raised from the sale of the buildings affected will be “reinvested into the justice system”.

It is expected to be axed in September 2019 following the announcement earlier this week on July 24.

Justice Secretary David Gauke said: “All money raised from the sale of these buildings will be reinvested into the justice system, and we want to reassure communities that those affected by closures will have access to alternative courts.

"We must ensure we use public money effectively and make decisions in the best interest of the wider justice system."

Wandsworth County Court joins Banbury Magistrates’ and County Court, as well as magistrates’ courts in Chorley, Fleetwood, Maidenhead, and Northallerton in being axed.

Blackfriars Crown Court will also go.

There were plans to shut Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, however, plans were scrapped after the Ministry of Justice received more than 700 responses.
