Storm Brendan brings Yellow weather warnings across UK

Cautionary yellow warnings were issued for the West of the country on Monday morning, with heavy rain and gusts of up to 80mph possible.

Meanwhile, yellow warnings for predicted strong winds throughout the UK were announced for Tuesday (January 14).

Large swathes of the South including areas of South London, Surrey and Kent are also under yellow warnings Tuesday for expected heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

"Strong winds will develop on Tuesday which may bring some disruption," the Met Office warned UK residents on Monday.

"Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely. Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges (are) likely.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves," a spokesperson said.

The heavy rains predicted for Tuesday carried further warnings for those living in South London, Surrey and Kent.

"Rain, heavy at times, may bring some disruption on Tuesday and Wednesday," the Met Office said.

"Spray and flooding on roads (will) probably mak(e) journey times longer

"Bus and train services (will) probably affect journey times

"Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely."

The Environment Agency (EA) meanwhile issued more specific flood warnings for areas in Surrey.

The River Thames at Trowlock Island near Kingston is expected to swell due to a combination of the heavy rainfall and high tides.

"Flooding is possible - be prepared.

"The next high tide is expected at Trowlock Island at 13:00 and the following high tide is expected at 05:15 (14/01/20).

"The next high tide is forecast to reach 5.00 metres and the following 4.6 metres. We are closely monitoring the situation," an EA spokesperson said via the body's governmental website.
