The battle lines have definitely been crossed in Ashtead after a pirate flag at the centre of a dispute was mysteriously chopped down.

The flag showing a skull and crossbones and its pole, which David Waterman erected outside his Purcell Close home in March, was cut down sometime on May 20 while his daughter was at school.

"I’m still as determined to keep it as ever."

"It was up when she left for school at 8am but was cut down by the time she returned at 4pm," explained Mr Waterman, who works as a firefighter at Battersea fire station.

At first the 41-year-old thought the culprit was Mole Valley District Council, whose senior planning enforcement officer had written to him on April 21 telling him he was likely to face prosecution if the flag was not removed within seven days because he did not have permission to fly it.

The council claimed the letter came in response to complaints from neighbours about the flag, which the dad-of-four bought for £5 from Abracadabra party shop in Ashtead.

But Mr Waterman refused to take it down, saying the flag symbolised a show of resilience against certain neighbours who he claimed pick on his younger children - aged eight and 10 - for playing outside.

So when he discovered it had been chopped down he presumed it was the action of the council. But a councillor told him the authority had nothing to do with it.

"An unknown person cut it down, I'd assume with a hacksaw," said Mr Waterman, "I have my suspicions who it was."

He subsequently reported it to the police, who are investigating.

"I put the flag back up the night it was targeted and it's still there," he added. "I'm about to lodge my appeal against the council's decision that it has to be removed. I'm still as determined to keep it as ever."

Well I'm glad that Mr Waterman is sticking to his guns. I mean it's his house and if he wants to have a pirate flag, a rainbow flag or any other flag outside of it that should be his business shouldn't it? There's certainly no excuse for vandalising someone elses' property.

Harry, as far as I'm aware from having read other articles on the subject, you are unfortunately incorrect, the house is rented and Mr Waterman does not own it, it may well have been the landlord who removed it.

Chav, you are correct, my home is rented from Haig Homes, a landlord that provides social housing for ex-service people. I can confirm it was not the landlord that removed it. Its removal was an act of trespass and criminal damage.

Good on you mr Waterman. Why should anyone tell you what flag you can fly and what you cant ? If it was a union jack would people tell you to take it down ? I think not. So if you can fly one type of flag then surely you can fly any type. I dont see what right the council have to interfere in your private life, I mean whats next ? Telling us what colour t-shirts we can wear or what type of hat.
I always like to see the little man (no offense) standing up for his rights against the big and powerful and their oppression.
Personally I support you whole heartedly Mr Waterman and would hoist my own flag if I lived in Ashtead.

The person who chopped the flag down needs a medal and Mr Waterman needs to be done for wasting police time!!! Lets face it he's brought it all on himself what makes him so above the law..... nothing springs to mind. What a view of life your poor child is being given!!!! The words 'grow up!' spring to mind!

AC you moron.

Mr Waterman thinks he is above the law? How did you come to that conclusion? I cant say I have heard of the law that bans members of the public from displaying non-offensive flags.. I could understand if the flag tells people to **** off etc, but its a bloomin pirate flag!

The words "criminal damage" spring to mind.

All I have to say C is why don't you find him a house near you and then his poor neighbours will be rid of him as you obviously have the same lack of values as he does!

AC, I bet you didn't complain when everyone was flying union jacks back during the last world cup. Why is it that as soon as someone wants to be slightly different to everyone else people like you and like the council have to jump on them ?
The World According to AC. We all wear the same standard grey uniform, live in the same standard box houses, 2.2 children and washing the car on a Sunday morning, voting conservative and enjoying east enders are compulsory.

AC. Please explain how flying a flag means you have a lack of values. You're just spouting rubbish.

And to question my values? Who are you to judge? You don't know me! Silly man!

Until you have anything interesting/construc
tive to say, don't bother, you are only making yourself look small.

C: Thank you for your supportive comments. Whoever AC is seems to be mistaken. I have been a good neighbour to those that live around me and have helped my elderly neighbours with jobs that are a little beyond them now. Unfortunately not all neighbours are as friendly as others and it is the prying, bullying behaviour of one such couple that led to the flag remaining.

You are more than welcome Mr Waterman.

I would advise you to install a small cctv camera to your property, if that isn't enough of a deterent to these people then perhaps put the flag back up and catch them in the act. A picture says a thousand words.

I hope you dont have anymore trouble.
