12:12pm Wednesday 11th June 2008

Two men have raided a Carshalton bookies, making off with Derby day cash.

Flying Squad detectives are investigating the raid on the Wrythe Lane Ladbrokes about 7pm on Saturday.

Police said two men wearing balaclavas entered the rear of the shop and threatened three staff behind the counter.

They took the cash and left by the rear into a service road.

No one was injured.

"The takings were significant because it was the day of the Epsom Derby," a Met Police spokesman said.

One of the men is described as white and police are studying CCTV from inside the shop to get more details.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the raid but has been bailed to return pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 7232 6530 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Surrey Police said Derby day had gone off without serious trouble.

More than 100,000 race lovers attended but by 7pm there had been few arrests and no major traffic incidents.

Those arrested included three men for assault, one man for affray and another man was detained on an outstanding warrant
