Balham school judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted

A Balham secondary school has received a glowing report from Ofsted.

Inspectors declared Chestnut Grove School, in Chestnut Grove, to be an outstanding school which has created a cohesive and welcoming community for children from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.

Their recent reports praised the school, which specialises in arts and modern foreign languages and has a large proportion of pupils from ethnic minority groups.

It showed that despite this diversity the school produced outstanding results. Its specialist arts status had a significant impact on the school and contributed to a creative and colourful environment through imaginative displays of students' work, which stimulated students to develop even further, said the report.

It also said pupils were proud of their school and knew they are valued.

The academic and vocational curriculum motivated students and enabled them to make excellent progress, continued the report. Teaching and learning were good because teachers knew their students well and work hard to help them achieve their potential. Leadership and management were also outstanding.

Headteacher Margaret Peacock said: "We are delighted to have received such a positive Ofsted report. It is a testament to the hard work of all our staff and pupils and the support of governors and parents."
