A Developer has appealed to the Mayor of London after its plans for a 16-storey, 132-bedroom, hotel at Clapham Junction were thrown out by Wandsworth Council.
Last Thursday the council’s planning applications committee refused the Falcon Road scheme because it was too “dominant” and failed to preserve or enhance the Clapham Junction conservation area.
But, despite the council’s refusal, the scheme could still get the go ahead from the Mayor of London after the developer asked him to rule on the application.
Developer Oak Trading Company said by rejecting the scheme the council risks deterring further investment in the town centre contrary to the Mayor’s regeneration policies.
The council’s planning applications chairman Leslie McDonnell said: “There is scope for a taller building here but it must respect its immediate surroundings and the properties around it.
“It would be regrettable if the council’s decision were overturned. We are not saying we do not want investment here – just that any development must be of the right scale and size for its location.”
The Mayor of London will now decide whether to uphold the council’s decision.
