The inquest into the tragic and gruesome death of Southfields teenager Cara Burke was heard this week.

Miss Burke, of Whitlock Drive, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Brazilian national Mohamed D’Ali Carvalho dos Santos on July 30 last year.

Santos, 21, has since been tried and sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by a Brazilian court, but he could be released after only eight years for good behaviour.

The 17-year-old had travelled to Brazil earlier in 2008 with Santos but ended their relationship after learning of his involvement with drugs.

Miss Burke was killed by Santos after she threatened to tell the police and his family about his increasing drug use.

The Southfields resident died from a solitary stab wound, but Santos attempted to cover up the murder by brutally dismembering her body and hiding the remains in different locations in his home town of Goiania.

Speaking at Westminster Coroner’s Court Dr Paul Knapman said: “Cara Burke came under the influence of her boyfriend, followed him to Brazil, split up a few months later and he murdered her and mutilated her body.

“She was unlawfully killed and I therefore record that Cara Marie Burke died from a stab wound.”
