MPs call for cut in 'aircraft stacking' if third runway goes ahead

A cut in the "excessive" stacking of aircraft in the skies above Heathrow was today demanded if a third runway goes ahead.

A cross-party committee of MPs said the extra capacity must be used to bring more peace to the thousands of people - many in Hounslow and Richmond - plagued by circling jets.

The Government should also look at limiting noise levels and aircraft numbers over beauty spots, the report from the House of Commons transport committee said.

MPs were also concerned that the extension of the European Aviation Safety Agency's remit could mean a lowering of safety standards.
