An Oscar nominated actress is fronting a campaign to raise £43,500 to save a Battersea cancer charity facing cut backs.
Susannah York, patron of the Paul D’Auria Cancer Support Centre based in Clapham Junction, has appealed for help after the centre lost sources of funding.
A centre spokesman said cut backs meant the Home Visiting Service, an award winning scheme that sends out over 50 volunteers to the homes of people who are house-bound by their illness, could be lost.
The service provides a lifeline to clients who are nearing the end of their life, offering massage, reflexology, counselling and befriending in their homes.
Ms York, who in 1969 was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, said: “It is vital that small charities which are incredibly valuable to the community like the Paul D’Auria Cancer Support Centre continue to be funded in these difficult times. The Centre gives enormous help to local people with cancer and their families with its outreach work and great variety of support services.”
