A thug wrecked a takeaway on the same day he beat his own grandfather to death in an alcohol-fuelled frenzy, the Old Bailey heard.

Paul Peters, 76, had suffered months of abuse before being murdered by Wayne Edwards, 33, of Francis Chichester Way, Battersea, and his half-brother Anton Sanderson, 24, of Latymer Road, Edmonton, the jury was told.

Mr Sanderson, who has a girlfriend and a six-year-old child, admits causing £17,000 of damage to Noor Tandoori, in Battersea Park Road, on the evening of May 2.

A delivery driver told the court: “The man [Sanderson] said he wasn’t going to pay and then spat at Mr Kahn [the proprietor].

“He said give [the food] to me or else I will smash up your shop. The man pushed the coffee machine on the right hand counter on to the floor.

“He went straight up to the glass counter and kicked it once causing the glass to break, went to the left hand counter to do exactly the same thing, and went up to the right hand counter and smashed it with his hand.”

The driver said Mr Edwards told staff: “Don’t move or we’ll hurt you.”

In court, Mr Sanderson’s lawyer said his client wished to apologise for his “unforgiveable” behaviour, which Mr Kahn accepted.

The half-brothers are accused of beating Mr Peters with pieces of furniture and empty vodka bottles.

The former tailor was found on the morning of May 3 this year, semi-naked on his kitchen floor with “devastating” injuries, including 33 separate rib fractures.

His two grandsons had both been living intermittently at his flat in Francis Chichester Way, Battersea, and Mr Edwards had been raised by him, the court was told.

The court heard Mr Peters had previously been heard begging to be let out of a cupboard.

Then, four days before his death, Mr Peters told police: “I do not want Wayne living with me. This could escalate and God knows what could happen to me.”

Mr Edwards’ former girlfriend Lee Beddoe, 34, is alleged to have helped clear up blood and removed evidence from the scene.

Ms Beddoe, of Elsley Road, Battersea, denies assisting an offender.

Both men deny murder.

The trial continues.
