Train passengers were facing hour long delays tonight as last night’s snowfall continued to cause knock-on effects for commuters.

South West Trains (SWT) said passengers could expect hour delays due to “continuing disruption resulting from poor weather conditions”.

A spokesman said services were subject to short notice cancellation and trains could have fewer carriages than normal.

He said: “Throughout the night, Network Rail operated a full programme of anti-icing trains and South West Trains also ran empty trains across the network on their behalf to try and improve conditions. However, the severe weather has continued to have an impact on services.”

Southern Trains said its services were subject to alterations, cancellations and delays, with the most affected routes being the Wimbledon loop and East Croydon to Milton Keynes.

Passengers were advised to allow additional time for journeys check the latest travel information before setting off at southwesttrains.co.uk or southernrail.com.

The weather also caused four schools - Greenmead school, Putney, Our lady queen of heaven Primary, Putney, Roehampton Church of England Primary and St George’s Church of England Primary in Battersea - to close.

St George’s Hospital in Tooting said it would be “open as usual” tomorrow.

A spokesman said: “The Trust reviewed all elective patients today and is planning business as usual on Thursday. The Trust is doing everything it can to meet the needs of all cases, both elective and emergency, and will continue to review the situation daily.”

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said its gritting operation was continuing: He said: “Today is the twentieth day our gritting crews have been working since the first cold snap in mid December.

"We have approximately 520 tonnes of salt left which, according to the latest forecasts from the Met Office, will be enough to see us through to the end of this prolonged cold spell. The supply of further grit is now being controlled by central government.”

The Met Office is predicting no further snowfall overnight with temperatures staying above freezing.
