The Richmond Park rally in protest of parking charges is to go ahead - despite the Government agreeing to the fees today.

Zac Goldsmith, one of the organisers of the mass rally, said the decision to charge drivers to park in Richmond and Bushy parks made the protest “more vital”.

Mr Goldsmith said: “The rally will absolutely go ahead as planned on January 30.

“It is vital that we get a big turnout. I believe we will.”

Tory trio Mr Goldsmith, Putney MP Justine Greening and parliamentary candidate for Twickenham Deborah Thomas will unite with Lib Dem MPs Vince Cable and Susan Kramer for the march.

It is expected to attract a large number of supporters from various communities.

The news that Culture Minister Margaret Hodge’s decision to charge visitors up to £1 an hour to park in Richmond and Bushy parks has not scuppered the planned rally will come as a relief to campaigners.

Supporter Inmaculada Martinez said: “I will be at the rally and also some other neighbours in Barnes as well as good friends from Kensington and Chelsea that feel this is another of the last straws to make living costs in London a living hell.

“I applaud every effort that our MP Ms Kramer is putting to this effect and also what other politicians in the area are doing to help us show our opposition to this disgraceful action.

“I am outraged that the Royal Parks has been ill advised and no one has managed to demonstrate that this action will bring more negative impact than positive on the park, its visitors and the enjoyment that we all feel when strolling its two century old grounds.

“There is nothing sacred in our country and we Londoners are finally coming to terms with a very un-British attitude, which is to complain and be heard rather than stiffing our upper lips.

“Enough is enough.”

The rally starts at 10.30am in the car park at Pembroke Lodge.
