They say take care of the pennies and the pounds will take look after themselves - and that might be the case for a Streatham Park artist who is hoping a self portrait made from thousands of pennies will be the springboard to her success.
Student Mary Nugent, 47, of Nimrod Road, used 5,500 1p coins to create a 5ft round self-portrait for the final project of her creative expressive therapies course at Derby University.
The artist travelled hundreds of miles each week to build the portrait - created by different shaded coins that were left outside for differing periods of time.
She said: "I was interested in exploring the benefits of education versus the cost of education - something which as a mature student was very important to me which is why I chose to use penny coins as a symbol of money."
