London is to be the first city in the UK to trial on-street cycle safety mirrors and the first of these has been installed on a traffic signal at a junction in Tooting.

The mirrors give greater visibility to drivers of large vehicles and the aim is to reduce the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured in collisions with lorries.

There will also be a new cycling awareness campaign to warn cyclists that undertaking lorries at junctions can be fatal and an agreement has just been signed with the Freight Transports Association (FTA) to improve cycle safety in London.

Mayor Boris Johnson, said: “Safety is the top priority of the cycle revolution that we're bringing to London. That is why we are taking direct action to do everything we can to give cyclists and HGV drivers the tools and information they need navigate our roads, and each other, safely.”

The six month trial will eventually include 39 cycle safety mirrors on London's road network.

The Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) are calling for more people to sign up for TfL funded cycle training available from London's borough councils. Visit tfl.gov.uk/cycling for information about the training.
