More than 100 people were evacuated from a 15-storey hotel and apartments after a blaze broke out in an underground car park.

Ten fire engines and about 50 firefighters were called to the basement car park fire at the Falcon Wharf residential building, which houses the Hotel Rafayel, in Lombard Road, Battersea, at 5.40pm yesterday.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said "about 120 people were evacuated from the hotel and apartment block as a precaution".

He said six cars and four motorcycles were damaged by the blaze but no injuries have been reported.

Nadeem Bux, a resident in the building, told BBC news: “We're still not allowed down there so I don't know if my car was damaged or not.

“It was apparently a classic car that caught fire - there are lots of expensive cars down there.

“The firemen were exhausted - one guy said that it was the most low visibility fire he'd ever been in.”

The cause of the fire, which was under control by 9.21pm, is under investigation.
