"We love you Clapham Junction."

This was one of hundreds of messages written on boarded up shops in Battersea, near to the popular station, following last Monday's riots.

In the wake of widespread looting and vandalism in the area, the community has come together to stand up for their home town.

By last Tuesday afternoon, Battersea was awash with hundreds of keen volunteers holding brooms - keen to get the area clean and back to normal as soon as possible.

Other groups are now trying to harness this spirit to try and help the surrounding community get back on its feet.

Organiser of Tuesday's clean-up, Heather Taylor, has begun a campaign called Riot Remedy, which is helping to match volunteers with people that need them.

This Saturday saw one of the first projects take place, with people flocking to the Doddington Estate to help transform the community garden.

After Ms Taylor was contacted by Councillor Simon Hogg, she posted the event on Twitter and Facebook to help get more people along and members from the Women of Wandsworth (WoW) and residents from the estate came down to dig, weed and plant to give the garden a new lease of life.

Sandra Munoz Alvarez of WoW said: "It is good to see that after all these negative riots, the community is getting together, building bridges and finding ideas to improve our community."

Another group called Battersea Bounce Back is looking for ways to help vandalised businesses, such as the Party Superstore, re-open again.

Organiser Hayley Short said: "I thought I wanted to do something so took to Twitter to find out ideas and I got a really good response from people and came up with the Battersea Bounce Back idea and it is growing."

An open meeting took place on Tuesday night to brainstorm ideas of what to do, with cake sales, comedy nights and a fancy dress street party being among the fundraising suggestions.

And in a similar idea to Peckham's Wall of Love, residents' stuck post it notes and wrote on the boarding outside Debenhams, saying what they love about the area.
