A TV presenter is encouraging people to put on their walking shoes and sign up for a dementia charity's flagship fundraising event next month.

Alzheimer's Society charity ambassador and This Morning host Ruth Langsford is calling on people to get together with their families and friends to sign up for the London Memory Walk, which takes place in Battersea Park on Sunday, September 18.

The Memory Walk is the charity's main fundraising event, which sees walks taking place around the UK throughout September.

The money raised by Memory Walk will help fund vital services for people with dementia and their carers such as day support and carers groups.

Ms Langsford said: "My father, Dennis, has Alzheimer’s disease. When people are first diagnosed with this awful condition they and their families are often in shock and feel bewildered and isolated. Alzheimer’s Society services are there to support people with dementia and their carers from day one.

"Memory Walk is a fantastic event that brings the whole family together. I would encourage everyone to sign up and help us make it a day to remember. You can even bring your dog."

There are three distances to choose from - two miles, five miles and 10 miles.

Walks will begin at 11am, with registration opening from 9.30am.

Maggie Owolade, area manager for the Alzheimer’s Society in London said: "Memory Walk is an excellent opportunity for families and friends to get together and enjoy a day to remember with lots of entertainment and refreshments, whilst also helping to raise funds for local services.

"This year is the tenth anniversary of Memory Walk and I would encourage everyone to sign up and help us celebrate."
