A dog walker has become an internet sensation after a video of him chasing his dog, chasing deer in Richmond Park was posted on YouTube.

The unnamed man shouts "Oh Jesus Christ" as mischievous mutt Benton steers the 30-strong herd dangerously toward a road.

Drivers had to hit their brakes as the deer leapt in front of traffic, with the energetic playful dog and its out-of-breath owner following close behind.

The clip, which has been viewed more than 600,000 times, has become a hit on Twitter and was the most popular topic of discussion on the micro-blogging site on Tuesday, November 22.

Celebrity fans have raved about the video and at one stage "Benton" - later identified as Fenton - was Britain’s most trended thread on Twitter.

Graham Linehan, the comedy writer and director of Father Ted, posted: "Whoever did this is a comedy God."

Teddington_Town wrote: "As soon as it's confirmed that no deer/dog/actors were harmed I will be making an MP3 ringtone out of this and become rich."

It has also inspired web users to create their own spoof videos, including "Benton in London" that incorporates the dog owner’s frantic calls for Benton to come back with a classic clip from 1981 horror film An American Werewolf in London.

BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine posted on Twitter: "Re the guy who chased after his dog #Benton in Richmond deer park... whoever uploaded this take on it is a genius."
