The plight of terror suspect Babar Ahmad will not be discussed in a full debate in Parliament, despite gaining 140,529 signatures in an e-petition.

Mr Ahmad, from Fountain Road, Tooting, was imprisoned without trial following an extradition request from the US.

The 37-year-old was arrested in 2003 and is the longest detained without charge British terror suspect.

A petition calling on the Government to put him on trial in the UK gained over 100,000 signatures this month, enough to warrant a parliamentary debate.

But members of the Free Babar Ahmad (FBA) Campaign are dismayed that the matter is going to be discussed in existing discussion on extradition next week.

The FBA campaign is now asking for local MP's representing the signatories to support Mr Ahmad's plight and secure proper consideration in Parliament.

Babar Ahmad's family said: "Other e-petitions which have secured over 100,000 signatures have been debated in the main chamber of the House of Commons.

"The decision to treat this e-petition differently is a slap in the face of over 140,500 people who demanded that Babar be put on trial in the UK.

“Now that it is clear that the call to put Babar on trial in the UK has not just cross-party backing but also enormous public support."

In August this year, Mr Ahmad's friends and family marked the seventh anniversary of his detention.

Mr Ahmad, an IT technician at Imperial College, London, was alleged to be the leader of a small UK based group providing "logistical support, financial assistance, recruits and computer expertise" for overseas Jihadi groups when he was arrested at his home.
