A support group for brain injury victims that faces homelessness has received “brilliant” news from hospital bosses.

Headway South West London faced an uncertain future after the announcement last month of plans to sell the Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre in Wimbledon.

The group, which supports victims of brain injuries and their families, currently uses rooms at the centre for free to hold monthly meetings – and trustees worried it might struggle to find cash to rent a new home.

St George’s Hospital Trust – which owns the 1960s-built, 32-bed unit – said it was “not fit for purpose”, and announced plans to sell it in the next six months.

Cash from the sale would be used to expand and develop Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, where the services would be transferred.

But last week, St George’s said support groups using the Wolfson would be invited to use space at Queen Mary’s or St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

It also announced a public consultation over the move.

Trustee Rachel Allan said the news was “brilliant” – but the group would have to consider if the new locations were practical for meetings.

She said: “We’re grateful they’re taking us into consideration, and we haven’t been forgotten.

"We would have to discuss with members if they could get to the new offer and what the logistics would be.”

Health bosses said services at the Wolfson would temporarily be transferred to St George’s before being permanently relocated to Queen Mary’s within two years.

They said the plans would improve accomodation for patients and allow them to begin their recovery earlier.

The plans will be discussed in a public meeting at 6pm on Tuesday, December 6, at the Wolfson in Copse Hill and in another at 7pm on Wednesday, December 14, at Queen Mary’s in Roehampton Lane.
