Comedian Paul Merton received a manicure from South Thames College students when they appeared on BBC’s The One Show on Monday.
The comedian, who worked at the Tooting employment office for seven years before leaving to pursue a career in comedy, was given the treatment by 25-year-old Susan Atim, a Level 3 beauty therapy student at the college.
Alongside Susan was a former Thames College student Sophy Robson, who now runs her own nail salon in Chelsea having completed a Level 3 course in nail extensions. Sophy, who lives in Wandsworth, attended the college in 2000 and has since created nails for Kylie Minogue. She has also just returned from networking and making contacts in the beauty industry at London Fashion Week.
The pair discussed the merits of vocational qualifications and defended the NVQ qualification, advising students who want to get into the beauty industry to complete formal training if they want to be considered for jobs.
