The number of people commuting by riverbus is set to rocket after planning permission was granted for a new landing pier between Wandsworth and Battersea railway bridges.

Hundreds of residents already rely on the Putney to Blackfriars riverbus service but the newly-approved development at Plantation Wharf, Battersea, will create an extra stopping point for those looking to travel into and across the capital along the River Thames.

Riverboat operator Thames Clippers recently expanded its operation to St George Wharf in Vauxhall and it intends to further extend the commuter service as far as Putney.

Putney MP Justine Greening said: "The river taxi will make a difference - a good way of getting people across the river - TFL have got a five-year contract with the tender to keep it going for longer."

The main pierhead pontoon at Clove Hitch Quay will provide lighting and a passenger shelter for year round use, including seating, a passenger information board and CCTV.

A report from the service provider described the Plantation Wharf stop as "the missing link in the overall vision of a comprehensive river transport service".

Councillor Nick Cuff, Wandsworth Council’s planning committee chairman, said: "A new public passenger landing pier will offer an alternative mode of transport for local people and tourists as well, play a part in alleviating overcrowding on nearby bus routes and boost the local economy."
