Putney will still get 10 new hybrid buses this year, despite the Mayor of London slowing down the roll-out of the eco-friendly vehicles.

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed 10 hybrid buses and 13 Euro 5 diesel buses will be running in Putney by October.

The buses will be introduced to the borough, despite Boris Johnson slowing down the roll out of them this year.

Experts say pollution from buses is the primary cause of the high levels of Nitrogen Oxide found in the air in Putney, linked to asthma in young children and heart attacks in adults.

Mr Johnson previously pledged all buses coming into service will be hybrid to sort out the issue, but there will now only be 52 introduced in the capital by May.

A spokesperson for TfL said: "The capital costs had not come down a number of years ago as we were hoping it would come down. It won't affect anything announced this year."

Jenny Jones, London Assembly Green Party Member, criticised Mr Johnson for failing to introduce more green buses into service.

She said: "We know that hybrid buses reduce pollution, so why is the Mayor slowing down the roll-out rather than speeding it up?

"Instead of eight prototype buses, we could have had another 96 low polluting hybrids on our roads. Pound for pound this is a bad deal for London's environment."

The Putney Society and Wandsworth Council have launched a joint petition to campaign for more low emission buses on Putney's roads.
