The route the Olympic torch will take through Sutton was unveiled today, along with the names of the torchbearers who will carry it.

On Monday, July 23, just four days before London 2012's opening ceremony , the torch will enter the borough in Beddington, before being carried along the A232 Croydon Road through Carshalton to Sutton.

It will then be carried down Sutton High Street, before the route turns down Sutton Common Road, then onto the A217 Reigarte Avenue, making its way to the Rosehill roundabout, where it will enter Merton.

The names of the 23 people who will take it in turns to carry the torch as it makes its way through the borough have also been announced.

Potential torchbearers were nominated through programmes run by Locog and sponsors Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung in 2011.

They aimed to recognise and reward people with a story of personal achievement and or contribution to the local community.

Among the torchbearers will be ex-investment banker John Dawson, 45, from Cheam, wh was left brain damaged and partially blinded after a road accident.

He spent two-and-a-half weeks in a coma and six months in hospital after a lorry knocked him off his motor scooter and drove over his head and back.

An Olympic Torch relay spokesman said: "It was not clear if he would ever regain speech and movement. John is now a valued member of the community as a volunteer and trustee of Sutton Association for the Blind (SAB), actively willing to give his time to the benefit of others.

"He is a true inspiration to anyone who has suffered a major trauma but had the determination and willpower to succeed, despite life changing disabilities, to work to improve not only his own life as a dedicated family man, but for others, especially those who are also visually impaired like himself."

John completed the London marathon walking and running in 2006 and rode a tandem in the London to Paris Bike Ride in 2010.

Through sponsorship he helped fund services and activities to improve the lives of other visually impaired people in the community, including establishing an activity club for visually impaired children in Merton.
