Fire above Wandsworth nail salon forces woman to flee flat
A woman had to flee her home when a fire broke out in a flat above a Wandsworth nail salon last night.
Four fire engines were called to the blaze in Mitcham Road at 9.30pm yesterday.
It was put out just before 11pm, with fire crews using an aerial appliance to investigate the building.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but is not believed to be suspicious.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "No one was sent to hospital, one of the occupants left before we got there.
"She was treated for minor smoke inhalation on the scene."
Rachel Blundy, a neighbour who saw the fire said: "There was lots of smoke billowing out of the window and when a firefighter managed to open it further, bits of debris started flying into his face.
"He decided to get down and used the hydraulic lift on the top of the fire engine instead.
"No one was carried out while I was there but two more fire engines turned up so it must've been quite serious, or else they were making sure it didn't spread.
"The windows in the flat were completely black from smoke."
The fire service reminded people to install a fire alarm, after finding the flat did not have one.
