The government is being urged to bring forward plans to help local authorities crack down on dangerous dogs.

London councils are calling for action as the problem with 'status dogs' used by gangs as weapons is growing.

In 2006 the number of dogs seized by the Metropolitan Police stood at 193, in 2010 the figure rose to 1,107.

The number of dogs destroyed went up from 27 to 563 during the same period.

Now London Councils, which represents the capital's 33 authorities, is pressing the government to bring forward promised proposals for possible changes to the law.

What is a 'dangerous dog'? I blame the owners for making them that way. I have in recent times witnessed people with what would be considered a 'dangerous dog' holed up in a flat all day and then let out and they go beserk. Especially when they don't bother putting them on a lead and they bolt out of the door and attack the nearest person. It is frightening for local residents. The owners are in complete denial about their actions. What rights will we as residents of Sutton get with regards the owner's behaviour and treatment of their dog(s)?

I keep saying it but you are all targeting the wrong end of the lead. It is the 2 legged animal that needs to controlled, not the owner pleasing dog who does not know right from wrong!

yes, the stock photo of a barking alsatian (i least i think that's what's pictured here) needs to be replaced with all too current and often photos of "dangerous" dogs being beaten by their idiotic "owners". focus on the source of a dog's aggression, the human next to him.

"at least" i meant to say, not "i least"...anyway...

so more and more dogs continue to be destroyed but the problem is getting worse? gee, think maybe it's not the dog that's the true problem?!? "dangerous" dogs are almost always generally calm and loving as a given, provided they are in the right hands.

what should happen is, first of all, make breeding illegal full stop. and instead of a dog being killed (i'm tired of the euphemisms...), put him in a shelter for re-socialization, the irresponsible/ abusive person completes a jail sentence that isn't a joke(!) and the benefits they are (most likely) living on go directly to the shelter the dog went to. also, anyone who is an irresponsible or abusive dog owner should have to spend a night or two or many in a shelter themselves to see what "dangerous dogs" have to deal with all too often. AND they should have to witness a fair amount of them being "destroyed". stop tiptoeing around these morons! be as tough as they think they are!

I think it is called, 'EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION'! Why not - If you wish to/ or own a particular breed of dog known to be a dangerous(?) breed, you should have a licence to own the dog and have to attend 'doggy school' to learn about how to handle that type of breed too...
Chav fashion doesn't help either!
