These people are living in one of the most patriotic streets in London after their congratulatory message to the Queen in her Jubilee year was quite literally set in stone.

Residents in Festing Road, Putney, arranged for a permanent tribute to mark 60 years of the Queen's reign by asking Wandsworth Council to lay a specially engraved paving stone outside their homes.

The stone, which says Happy and Glorious Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee 2012 has been laid a stone’s throw from the River Thames, down which the Queen will be sailing during a grand river pageant on June 3.

It is the second paving stone of its kind to be laid in the road after residents clubbed together in 2009 to pay for a paving stone to commemorate storyteller David McKee - the creator of famous cartoon character Mr Benn - who lived at number 52 Festing Road and who based his character in 52 Festing Road.

Retired writer Hugh Thompson - the mastermind behind the paving stones - hopes the latest addition to the street, which he has dubbed The People’s Stone, will lead to more street art in years to come.

Mr Thompson, who has lived in Putney for 35 years, said: "Why should pavements be dull places, just for walking on? These pieces of street art can celebrate one-off events or lasting legacies but ultimately they could become a grand tapestry of stories celebrating the history of where we live."

The cost to engrave a paving stone is about £150, while the installation work costs around £230 - making a total cost of approximately £380.
