Two boys hit by a falling tree at a cricket club on Saturday have made a miraculous recovery.

Lewis Gaston and George Roberts, nine, who it was feared were seriously injured, were able to stand up and have their picture taken today with Spencer Club coach, former England and Surrey cricketer, Alex Tudor.

Mr Tudor visited the pair at St George's Hospital, Tooting, and said: "It's great to see the lads up and about. We were all really worried about them but it looks like they are making a great recovery.

"I've had so many messages of support from clubs and players around the world and I wanted to pass them on to the boys."

The tree collapsed in high winds at the Spencer Cricket Club, Fairview, Earlsfield on Saturday afternoon.

Aidan Oakley, also aged nine, hurt his leg during the accident and was discharged from hospital on Monday.

The boys were waiting to use practice nets before their first match as Surrey Inner London's under 9s, when the tree came down.

Ross Newby, club chairman, said: "This is a very unfortunate accident and we treat the safety of our kids as highly important.

"I am delighted, obviously we are delighted - that's what we are focused on, that they are making a recovery."

He said all matches at the club have been postponed until Wandsworth Council has completed investigating the scene, and he hoped things would be back to normal by the weekend.

The Met Office recorded strong wind speeds of 26kn and 38 gusts on Saturday afternoon, just below a gale on the Beaufort wind force scale.

Another tree fell on the same day close in Heathfield Road, Wandsworth, partially blocking the road.
