Police have confirmed that parts of the body of an "infant" has been found on Tooting Common.

The grim discovery was made just before 8am this morning near Dr Johnson's Avenue, off Tooting Bec Road, which splits Tooting Common.

An area near the car park on Dr Johnson Avenue has been cordoned off and forensic experts are examining the scene.

Investigators have yet to authenticate the discovery and it is not known, at present, how long the body parts had been there.

Rumours from various news agencies have reported that the body parts were that off a baby, rather than a child.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "We were called to reports of body parts, possibly of a child.

"Officers from Wandsworth are investigating to check the authenticity, but it seems to be authentic."

"We cannot say at this early stage how long the discovery had been on the common."

Residents and commuters inundated the newsdesk and Twitter with comments regarding the find.

Paul Gavin, who was on a bus to work, said: "The whole Wandsworth Police are out in force. The entire common is crawling with police. Hideous."

On Twitter, Heidi Vella wrote: "Horrible. Infant body parts found on Tooting Bec common this morning."

The area is popular with dog walkers, families and fitness enthusiasts because of the nearby pond, play area and tennis courts.
