The landlords of an historic Battersea pub which is facing closure will be holding a demonstration outside the town hall tonight.

The Castle, which counts Andrew Lloyd Webber among its regulars, was earmarked for demolition earlier this year and is set to be replaced by an "unpopular and ugly" building by developers Languard.

Since the planning application was submitted last year, landlords Cate Toomey and Aaron Tumata have set up the Defend the Castle Campaign.

A spokesman for the campaign: "We are particularly incensed at the way the Wandsworth Conservation Area Advisory Committee's recommendation to refuse was ignored by the planning officer, as were the views of the local MP and amenity society.

"This building will be a devastating blight on the Battersea Square Conservation Area visually and by stealing the pub garden for development."
