The mayor of Wandsworth participated in a sign language event on Tuesday organised by a housing association.

Viridian Housing, based in Clapham Road, Clapham, were launching their Learn to Sign Week, a national event running until October 5.

The housing association has specialised in services for deaf people and employs staff who can sign.

Councillor Adrian Knowles was given a tour of the Viridian head office and viewed an exhibition by residents living in Shanti homes - a refuge primarily for Asian women.

The mayor then joined everybody for lunch and gave a talk about how he learned signed language from his deaf parents.

He also spoke of his time working as an interpreter for the police. Throughout the event he signed and interpreted for guests.

Coun Knowles said: "I am delighted to meet so many deaf residents and to be present at the launch of such an inspirational week.

"Being here pays tribute to all of the great work that Viridian is doing to support the deaf community."

Roy Morgan, head of customer services, said: "We are thrilled that the mayor could join us and interact with so many of our customers.

"Viridian is one of the few housing associations that has colleagues that are qualified in British Sign Language and also employs a large number of deaf colleagues."

Viridian is aiming to raise awareness of Learn to Sign Week through workshops and events.
