A man and a woman continue to be questioned on suspicion of murder following the death of a baby girl.

West Yorkshire Police said a murder investigation had been launched after the seven-week-old girl died from her injuries in Pinderfields Hospital.

Officers were called on Thursday to the hospital after the girl was brought in from an address in Ashleigh Avenue, Pontefract, by ambulance with serious injuries.

Officers were informed the baby had died at about 3am on Friday, the force said.

An 18-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remain in custody, a police spokesman said.

Two police officers stood guard outside the semi-detached property on Friday night.

One man, who declined to be named, told BBC Look North: "One of the neighbours has actually seen an ambulance pull up and take them all out.

"I spoke to them once, but they kept themselves really to themselves."
