A bright start to the week in south London and Surrey has scotched fears of snowfall.

Met Office forecasters are predicting a dry day with some bright or sunny spells, with temperatures set to reach 14C.

"A cold start and another dry day to come with bright or sunny spells," said a forecaster.

"Winds will be light again so it should feel reasonably pleasant."

This evening looked set to remain generally dry, with some clear spells at first, but becoming mostly cloudy later with the odd light shower possible over northern parts of the region by dawn.

Temperatures will drop to around 5C.

Tomorrow will see cloud cover increasing, the forecaster warned.

He said: "Generally rather cloudy. Mostly dry at first, but outbreaks of showery rain developing during the morning and becoming heavier and more persistent during the afternoon.

"Turning colder later. Maximum temperature 12C."
