Busy Bees nursery at Wandsworth recently welcomed families and parents from the local community to a week of magical storytelling.

The Smugglers Way-based nursery took part in a national campaign, named ‘Bringing Stories to Life’, which aimed to show parents how they can make reading magical and enhance their child’s learning through story time at home.

The campaign was backed by several partners including Ladybird Books, acclaimed children’s author Ian Whybrow and Usborne Books.

During the week-long campaign, parents were invited into the nursery to take part in reading-based activities each day, all of which were designed to show the different techniques involved in bringing stories and books to life. This included a ‘share a story’ day on Tuesday 17th January 2017 where local Usborne Book representatives visited the nursery to read some of their all-time favourite stories with children, and parents also got the chance to earn book tokens for the nursery. Evelyn Herrera, nursery manager at Busy Bees in Wandsworth, said: “We’ve really enjoyed welcoming parents and families into the nursery. It was a fun-filled week, with lots of opportunities to share some of the ways we use storytelling and reading to enhance children’s learning on a day-to-day basis. It was also a chance for parents to get involved in some of their own storytelling and tell us which books they enjoyed reading most as a child.”

Parents were also give the opportunity to enter a national competition, which challenged those that visited Busy Bees at Wandsworth, to write their very own short stories in partnership with children and staff. The winning parent will earn an exclusive masterclass and book signing session with author Ian Whybrow, famous for writing many children’s books including Harry and the bucketful of Dinosaurs, at their local Busy Bees nursery and a family prize bundle from Ladybird Books.
