The Battersea Society is delighted to be unveiling a commemorative plaque to the jazz musician Sir George Shearing on Saturday 22nd April 2017 at 11.00 at Northcote Lodge School 26 Bolingbroke a Grove SW 11 formerly Linden Lodge School for the Blind which George attended.
Besides Alyn Shipton broadcaster and editor of George's autobiography Lullaby of Birdland unveiling there will be written tributes from Brian Kay, formerly King Singers, Lady Ellie Shearing, a Lord David Blunkett and Charlotte Kirwan ex-pupil of linden Lodge will share memories of playing duet with George when he visited in 1962 and music from the school band.
George who was born blind was the youngest of nine children, born and lived in Battersea. His father delivered coal and his mother cleaned the trains.
He played first in pubs and hotels, then joined a band of blind musicians and emigrated to America in 1947 where he became very successful with his quintet.
