Walthamstow fighter Lutalo Muhammad secures London 2012 Olympic bronze medal

Lutalo Muhammad is celebrating tonight after securing an Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo at London 2012.

The Walthamstow fighter was a surprise selection for the Team GB squad but he has justified his inclusion tonight with a fine display which sees him finish third in the under-80kg section.

Muhammad suffered defeat to Spaniard Nicolas Garcia Hemme but the 21-year-old was handed a reprieve through the repechage system.

He saw off Iran’s Yousef Karami 11-7 before enjoying one more victory over Armenian Arman Yeremyan at the ExCeL.

He led 4-1 after the first round having landed an early head shot and maintained the gap at 5-2 after round two.

A further head kick in the bout saw him comfortably into the lead and it was one he wouldn’t surrender, finishing 9-3 in front to become Britain’s first male Olympic taekwondo medallist.
