It was a case of much too little, far too late from a Sutton & Epsom team who were beaten by a spirited KCS Old Boy’s 22-15.

It was the hosts' first defeat of the season in London Division Two South West, but they remain top of the table.

Poor discipline and a lack of ball retention by Sutton allowed KCS to build an advantage that they turned into a try on 17 minutes.

With the visitors playing with more tempo and energy, it could have been a greater lead.

Sutton managed a penalty though Stephen Warnham against the run of play to stay within touching distance.

After a further KCS penalty extended their lead, Matt Whitaker finished well to give Sutton a share of the lead, against the run of play.

Just as it seemed Sutton would get away with their first half performance, KCS cut a decisive blow in the final minutes of the half scoring a converted try for a half time 15-8 lead.

The home crowd were expecting a big turnaround in performance at the start of the second half by a Sutton team that had shown none of its table topping form.

With the wind now in their advantage and KCS down to 14 men after their prop received a yellow card, it was all to play for.

Unfortunately the tempo was never raised and Sutton continued to struggle for possession and territory, while poor kicking and a lack of urgency in the tackle allowed KCS to apply further pressure.

In the 69th minute, they broke down the home defence again with a well-constructed forwards try to extend their lead further to 22-8.

This was the catalyst for much needed change. From the kick off, James Caddy charged down a clearing kick before pouncing on the loose ball to score a try and raise the home side’s hopes of getting out of jail.

Sutton began to play with much improved vigor and directness looking dangerous taking the ball forwards.

However, the KCS lads stood firm and defended as though their lives depended upon it.

Sutton & Epsom travel to Old Alleynians this weekend.
