A late goal from Antonio German rescued a point for Brentford as they drew 1-1 with Preston North End at Deepdale on Saturday.

The goal, with just one minute remaining, was practically the Bees first chance of the game, but they made it count at the start of a big week for the side with games against Swindon Town and Sheffield United on the horizon.

Preston enjoyed two early chances when Jeffrey Monakana broke from inside his own half but his wasteful shot flew wide of the right hand post.

A minute later Scott Laird was given time to shoot from inside Brentford's box, but Harlee Dean threw himself in front of the shot and blocked it with his body.

Simon Moore then made an excellent save when he dived to push away a low shot from Nicky Wroe.

A mazy run by Shaleum Logan set up Clayton Donaldson on the right hand side of the box, whose cross was blocked for a corner. Sam Saunders resulting corner was headed wide of the near post by Jonathan Douglas.

Moore almost cost his side dear when he inexplicably picked up a long back pass on the edge of his box. From the free kick the Bees' keeper twice made vital saves to keep Brentford level.

Brentford's defence continued to live dangerously when Dean stooped to try and head the ball back to Moore from the edge of his box, with the keeper doing just enough to put off Jack King, who had nipped in between the paid and shot wide of the post.

Straight up the other end and Saunders did well to set up Douglas, who shot over the bar from just inside the box.

Preston had the last chance of the half when Monakana shot over the bar from the right hand side of the Bees' box.

Brentford's first chance of the second half came after Douglas broke into the box and found Harry Forrester, but the midfielder shot wide.

Preston took the lead just after an hour when Brentford's defence initially cleared a corner but failed to deal with a subsequent ball into the box and Laird's scuffed shot bounced off the ground and high into the net.

Moore then kept his side in the game as he twice made good saves from Wroe in quick succession.

Monakana had another chance when he dribbled through Brentford's defence but his weak shot was easily held by Moore.

Preston should have wrapped things up when a superb cross-field pass set up David Buchanan on the left but his shot was saved by Moore and Wroe blasted the follow up chance wide.

Brentford rescued a point when a surging run from Dean saw him cross into the box and substitute Antonio German powerfully headed the ball past Steve Simonsen into the top right hand corner.
