Cup exit leaves Robins with the league on their mind

Carshalton Athletic manager Tommy Williams wants to concentrate on Ryman League Premier Division survival after his side crashed out of the League Cup on Tuesday night.

Visitors Wealdstone overturned a half-time deficit, given to the Robins by Hakeem Adelakun’s extraordinary 55-yard free-kick, to win 2-1 at Colston Avenue.

But that cup defeat is of little consequence given the Robins’ current run of five consecutive league defeats – including last weekend’s 3-0 reverse at Wealdstone – meaning this weekend’s six-pointer against fellow strugglers Thurrock has added importance.

Williams said: “I was very pleased with our performance in the first half and thought our initial formation worked out well. The loss of centre back Justyn Roberts through a knee injury at the break knocked us out of our stride.”

He added: “Everyone worked hard right until the end, and I thought young Sean O’Toole did well coming in at left back.

“But staying in the Ryman Premier is our main priority this season.

“It is disappointing to exit any cup competition, but we have two important league games at home coming up next, so I will work on getting everyone focused on those as we need to get some more points on the board.”

After Thurrock, the Robins host Enfield on Tuesday night.

Prince Philip of Greece says...

Good luck Tommy from all your old friends at Kingstonian. Now that Paul Diaper has (half) left you, everyone wishes you and The Robins the very best.
