Team GB Olympians may have come to the rescue of Surbiton’s men and women at the weekend, but Georgie Twigg insisted the club is not reliant on their top stars, writes Stuart Amos.

London Games stars Rob Moore and Twigg produced a match-winning double act for their respective teams at Sugden Road on Saturday and Sunday.

Moore scored the winner as his side beat East Grinstead 3-2 to move
them up to sixth place in the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division.

While Olympic bronze medallist Twigg bagged a second half brace, her first goals for her new team, to secure a 4-2 triumph for Surbiton Ladies over struggling Olton & West Warwicks 24 hours earlier.

Skipper Tim Deakin’s men came from 2-1 down to win after the visitors had wiped out Rob Schilling’s early opener, while goals from Vicky Bryant and captain Sarah Haycroft, had meant the scores were level for the ladies before Twigg’s intervention.

And the 21-year-old Olympic bronze medallist insisted both wins were the
result of team efforts.

“There are internationals at the club, but what is great about Surbiton as a club, is that it is never about individuals,” she said.

“There are regularly 25 to 30 players down at training for both the men and the women, which shows the depth of talent the club has.

“Everyone is fighting for their place and that forces everyone to work hard.

“It is good to draw on the experience of people like our international players, but it really is a squad effort.”

Surbiton Ladies, in their first season in the top flight, travel to Bowdon Hightown on Saturday knowing a win will keep them in the Women’s Hockey League Premier Division top four ahead of the Christmas break – which leaves them without an outdoor league game hockey until February.

“We’ve had a pretty good start to the season, but it is very tight at the top,” added Twigg.

“We’ve played Bowdon Hightown before so know what they are about, but they are only two points behind us in the league.

“We wanted to be in the top five before Christmas so a win would be an excellent way to go into the break.”

Deakin’s men visit Loughborough Students this weekend before their winter rest.
