Allwood leads the way indoor for Herne Hill Harriers

Herne Hill Harriers' track and field athletes continued their early season fine-tuning by recording a string of notable performances at the London Indoor Games.

Julien Allwood was the club's leading performer at the two-day meeting for senior and U20 athletes at Lee Valley Athletics Centre by jumping 15.37m to win the senior men's triple jump.

Samuel Adeyemi - racing again after missing virtually all of last outdoor season with injury - was in action over 400m, running 49:46secs to secure second place in the men's senior A race.

Jessie Knight, English Schools' senior girl's 400m champion and Harriers' club record holder, placed fifth in the 400m women's A race, clocking 56:58secs.

The 18-year-old's time was comfortably faster than any of the other U20 women who were all running in their own age group.

Hannah Edwards, another 400m runner, won the D-string race in 61:76secs, ahead of club-mate Rebecca Zelic who was third in 62:07secs.

Three Herne Hill athletes - Blade Ashby, Matthew Walcott and Rushane Thomas - also lined up for the 60m hurdle races, with Ashby's 8:22secs the pick of the performances.

AJ Boyce, Jonathan Grant, Daryl Thomas, Zanson Plummer, Tshon Carnegie, Royan Moore and Marvin Popoola were also in action over 60m.

Plummer's 6:97secs lifted him close to the top of the U17 men's indoor ranking. Thomas and Popoola later raced over 200m, with the latter coming third in the U20 men's A race in 22:72secs.

Meanwhile, 800m specialist Mike Cummings won the January instalment of the Brooks Serpentine Last Friday 5km, clocking a season's best time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds.

In other 5km action, Mohammed Ismail was fourth at the Brockwell park run, running 17:27. Fellow Harrier Richard Wonnacott was two places behind in 18:12, with Tommy Haycocks 16th in 19:47.

Harriers have announced that the capacity of the club-organised Frank Harmer Memorial 10km in Brockwell Park on March 3 has been increased from 200 to 300 in response to demand.
