Carshalton Athletic boss Tommy Williams lamented two disallowed goals during his side’s 2-1 defeat against Wingate and Finchley on Tuesday night but says they don’t mask a poor first-half performance.

“Tonight was an opportunity to take our momentum from Saturday’s victory against Thurrock forward so defeat is disappointing,” Williams said.

“Our performance in the first 45 minutes was poor but our response pleased me, but then we didn’t get some luck to go with it.”

Striker Nathaniel Pinney cut a two-goal deficit in half early in the second period but both he and Sol Pinnock had goals disallowed as the half wore on.

“I know referees have difficult jobs but the Pinney one was harsh. It seemed a fair clash as he ran through on goal, Nathaniel was simply stronger than his opponent,” he explained.

“Sol’s header from a corner was also not given and we weren’t quite sure why on the bench.”

The in-form Pinney is now suspended for the next three games but, although Williams said “he’ll be a big miss”, fellow striker Ola Sogbanmu is on his way back from injury and could be in the Carshalton squad this weekend.

“We wasted 45 minutes tonight but we cannot afford to be doing that anymore. The boys understand our future is in our own hands, regardless of what other teams do, and there are plenty of games left to play to secure it,” he added.

Carshalton Athletic welcome Leiston to Colston Avenue on Saturday.
