Kingston triathlete Alena Stevens blew away the field at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon to a claim top prize at the second time of asking.

Stevens, 30, who trains with Thames Turbo Powerbar, won the female 30-34 age group long course event by more than 60 minutes in eight hours, 28 minutes, 55 seconds.

Stevens also completed the course, comprising a 3km swim, 200km bike ride and 20km run, more than 45 minutes faster than the average race time of 9:14:31.

Last time out in the 2010 triathlon, Stevens finished second in the 25-29 age group in 8:57:46, and she also finished as eighth fastest woman in the 2009 Abu Dhabi half-marathon.

Stevens, pictured, said: “This was my third time in Abu Dhabi and it was very good.

“To be honest, I thought I had overdone it a bit on the bike but it all went well in the end.

“I was a little bit inconsistent with the training. I had two months good training and I was without a bike for a month so I play with what I can.”

Originally Slovakian, Stevens has lived in Kingston for a year.

She said: “My favourite thing about Kingston is the great people I have met in the past two years.

“If I compare it with living in Dubai and living in the Middle East, this area of Surrey is fantastic for training.”

She completed the swim in 49:02, the bike ride in 5:59:42 and the run in 1:34:08, which, including 6:05 in cross-overs, saw her finish 16 minutes faster than clubmate and training partner Liz Pinches.

She said: “It is interesting to go from training in Kingston to Abu Dhabi.

“It’s quite hard but I took advantage of coming one week in advance to get used to the weather conditions.”

Next up for Stevens is the London Marathon in April, and the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships in October
