Brentford skipper Kevin O’Connor, who is nearing a return to fitness from a long term ankle problem, had signed a new one year contract to run until the end of next season – his 15th as a professional at Brentford.

The 31-year-old, who recently returned to training with the squad, has made 484 appearances for the club in all competitions – scoring 43 goals.

And Bees boss Uwe Rosler, who expects striker Farid El Alagui to return to the starting line-up soon, hopes he adds to that tally.

“It was very important for me to keep Kevin on board and important to give him the chance to come back from his injury,” added the manager.

“We have a very young squad and need experience. Kevin brings that in abundance.

“He can play in different positions for us. He is only 31 years old and is still a good football age. Medically there is no problem for the future.”

Rosler has extended the loan deal of 19-year-old Everton defender Jake Bidwell on Wednesday to keep him at Griffin Park until April 6.
